Moments

Everyone wonders. Curiosity is part of human nature. We wonder about everything: from color to science to magic. But what makes us who we truly are?

The moments that define us are few and in between. These are the memories that stick with us forever, define who we are. They can be about anything.

A fight with my sister where we storm away, and when I see her again she has fallen asleep. She looks so peaceful and I feel so bad for causing her pain. Her hand reaches out and pulls me onto the bed, and I hug her, hoping she understands: No matter what, I will always love her.

It can be skiing with my friends. We’re laughing and racing down a slope, the wind in our faces and the snow in our faces. We feel invulnerable. Nothing is on our mind but the speed and the joy, and we want it to last forever.

It’s laughing with your family as you all watch Flash on the TV while eating dinner. You’re wrapped in blankets even though it’s summer and your mom’s feeding your little sister. You’re laughing at something the Flash has said and at that moment you feel free. Like there is nothing holding you back.

It’s standing on top of a mountain in India, looking out at the landscape below and feeling small. Tiny. Because we are but a blot on the canvas of life, and the more we do, the bigger the blot gets.

It’s those small moments that make us who we are. Whether we love Volleyball, or spend all our time drawing, we all have moments. Small ones or big, they make us who we are, and are more precious than anything. So if anyone asks who you are, you know: you are but a sum of the small and precious moments in your memory.
